I build a maintenance app, and I still got bit. So let me tell on myself, because the lesson is worth more than my pride.
LookOver reminded me my top end was due. I tore it down this week. The piston was toast, no surprise there, that’s just two-stroke life. You expect the piston. What I didn’t expect was the cylinder. It was scored.
A scored cylinder is another problem entirely, and it’s another chunk of money I shouldn’t have had to spend. About $700 worth, between the cylinder and the parts that came with it.
Here’s the part that stings. The damage didn’t start this week. It started back in 2023. End of a ride, less than a mile from the truck, I let something slide that I shouldn’t have. One small thing, the kind of thing that’s easy to wave off when you’re tired and almost loaded up. That little bit of neglect sat in the engine quietly doing damage for two years until it showed up as a scored cylinder and a $700 bill.
That’s the thing about powersports maintenance. The cost of skipping something rarely shows up that day. It shows up two years later, in a teardown, when it’s too late to do anything but pay for it.
I’m not telling you this to sell you anything. The reminder did its job. I’m telling you because I made the exact mistake LookOver exists to prevent, and even building the tool didn’t make me immune to a tired end-of-ride shortcut. The discipline is the whole game.
