Seven Bikes, One Mechanic, No Guessing

The mechanic, the riders, and the team owner all see the same bike history. How a race team keeps every top end on schedule with one shared garage.

By , founder and lifelong rider · 4 min read

Here's a quote I think about a lot. It's from Kody, a rider in Washington who races motocross and ATV motocross:

"I race motocross and ATV motocross with 7 bikes year-round. I can be mid-season and know my practice machine needs an oil change while my race machine needs a top end. I never have to think 'when was the last time I did this?'"

Seven bikes, one rider, and he knows where every one of them stands. Now add people. A mechanic. A second rider. A parent hauling everybody to the track. Maybe a sponsor who wants to see the bikes are being taken care of.

That's where it falls apart. Not the wrenching. The knowing.

The notebook in the toolbox

Every team has one. A spiral notebook in the top drawer of the toolbox, or a whiteboard in the trailer, or a group text that scrolls away by Tuesday. The mechanic writes down the top end. The rider forgets to mention he went down twice in practice. Somebody swaps the clutch at the track and nobody writes it down at all.

Then it's Thursday night, the bikes are going on the trailer, and the question comes up. How many hours on the race bike's piston?

Three people, three guesses.

One garage for the whole team

In LookOver, the team owner sets up a garage and invites the crew. Up to five people in one garage. Everybody sees the same bikes, the same service history, and the same reminders, on their own phone.

  1. The team owner creates the garage and adds the bikes.
  2. They invite the mechanic, the riders, and whoever else needs to see it, by email or by texting the link.
  3. Each person makes a free account and accepts the invite.
  4. They install the app, and every bike is there with its whole history.

The people you invite don't need Pro of their own. What they can do in your garage follows your plan, not theirs.

Pick who can do what

This is the part teams care about. Not everybody should be able to change everything.

Admins log services, edit machines, and invite people. That's your crew chief or head mechanic.

Members log services and edit machines. That's the rider who does their own air filter between motos.

Viewers see everything and can't change a thing. That's the parent, or the sponsor who wants proof the bikes are being looked after.

And every record shows who changed it and when. When the top end got done, you know who did it. If somebody leaves the team, their history stays.

Hours, miles, and race count

Race bikes don't live on a calendar. Pistons go on hours. Some parts go by how many races they've seen. LookOver tracks miles, engine hours, or race count on each machine, and a reminder can fire on whichever one hits first.

Set the top end on hours and the air filter on every race, and the reminders show up for the whole crew. The mechanic doesn't have to be the only one keeping count.

After a big Thursday night in the shop, you can knock out a whole pile of reminders on one bike at once, with one date for all of it.

Race bikes here, practice bikes there

If you run a lot of bikes, you can keep more than one garage, up to three of your own. The race bikes in one. The practice bikes in another. Your personal trail bike stays in your own garage where the team never sees it.

And if you want your crew to check a bike without handing it over, you can show it in their garage read only. They see the service history, reminders, hours, and miles. It never leaves yours.

When a bike gets sold at the end of the season, move it to the buyer's garage and everything goes with it. Services, reminders, schedule, files, and photos. That's a real selling point on a used race bike.

Running a bigger program?

If you run a team, a race school, or a program with more riders than a garage holds, contact me. Pricing for teams isn't set yet, and I'd rather hear what you actually need first.

For everybody else, it starts the same way as any garage. Get LookOver free, add the bikes, and invite the crew. The trial gives you 14 days of Pro with no credit card.

Common questions

How many people can share a race team garage?

Up to five people can share one garage. If your team or program needs more than that, contact Derek at lookover.app/contact.

Do riders and mechanics need their own Pro subscription?

No. Only the garage owner needs Pro. Invited riders and mechanics make a free account, and what they can do follows the owner's plan.

Can a sponsor or parent see the bikes without editing anything?

Yes. Give them the viewer role. Viewers see every bike, service, and reminder and can't change a thing.

Can LookOver track top end hours and race count?

Yes. Each machine can track miles, engine hours, or race count, and a reminder can fire on whichever one hits first.

Can I see who did a service on a team bike?

Yes. Every record shows who changed it and when, and if someone leaves the team, their history stays.
